Messi breaks Raul's Champions League record

Lionel Messi cemented his place as the greatest goalscorer in Champions League history in typically emphatic fashion by grabbing a hat-trick as Barcelona won 4-0 at APOEL on Tuesday 25, 2014. Messi's first, a close-range effort in the 38th-minute, saw him break the record held by former Real Madrid and Schalke star Raul as he claimed his 72nd goal in Europe's elite club competition. It also took him two ahead of long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

He followed it up with two more in the second half: the first a clever chip over the advancing goalkeeper after a nice through ball from Dani Alves; the second a tap-in after Pedro had cut the ball back. The 27-year-old has accumulated his haul in 91 games for Barcelona in the Champions League, while Ronaldo has scored his 70 in 106 matches. Raul needed 142 appearances to reach 71 strikes.

A 17 year old Pele on a street of Sweden before the 1958 World Cup

Pele turned 18 during the cup, helped Brazil to reach the finals and then win 5-2 vs Sweden, crowning Brazil as world champions for their first time ever, which turned him overnight into an international sensation. He scored twice in the final, but also let’s not forget that he was part of a great team. This is probably the last time his life was relatively normal. Before the tournament, he was more of a mystery outside of Brazil; after, one of the most popular athlete that ever lived.

He would go on to score 1200+ goals, be named FIFA player of the century, and win two more world cups (in 1962 and 1970) among countless other trophies. To this day no other footballer has ever won 3 world cups and likely never will. Right next to him is Zito, one of the best midfielders of all time. He was Pelé´s partner in Santos team and Brazil player in this World Cup.
